For today's Portager Student Spotlight, our student journalism team interviewed Brickston Rinehart, our most recent Onekama High School student of the month! Brickston is a freshman who recently finished his first season as a varsity ski athlete. Thank you for participating in this interview, Brick, and congratulations on being recognized!

1. What is your favorite class this year so far and why?
My favorite class this year so far has definitely been Environmental Science. I like the class because it is almost like a mix of earth science, space science, and math. And there are in class labs that are very fun to partake in.

2. What activities do you enjoy doing outside of school?

Outside of school my absolute favorite thing to do is to ski, both casually and also ski racing. I also love mountain biking in the summer and fall. Another hobby that I have is photography which I enjoy a lot.

3. What is one goal you have for the rest of high school that is important to you?

My biggest goal that I have for the rest of high school is getting better at skiing for school and keeping my grades up. Getting better at skiing is important to me because it is the only school sport that I do and I love it.

4. Is there a teacher that has helped/encouraged you the most? If so, who?

I don't think that there is one teacher that has encouraged me the most, it has really been all the teachers that I have who are encouraging and helping me.

5. How would your friends describe your overall character?

I think that my friends would describe me as funny, very smart, and respectful.

6. What have been your top two favorite moments in school so far this year?

My favorite moment at school was going to every one of the playoff football games and watching us win with crazy point differences. My other favorite moment from this school year was career week. I loved how it gave examples of future careers for students.

7. Do you have any thoughts about what you want to do after high school? If you do, what is one thing you are thinking about?

My plans after high school are to go to college somewhere, preferably in Michigan, and get a degree in something in engineering. I haven't pinpointed the exact field of engineering I want to go down yet.

8. What do you do when a class or assignment is or is getting really difficult?

When an assignment is really difficult, especially when I am having trouble understanding how one teacher explains it, I like to ask other teachers in the school for advice on that assignment.

9. What are two things you like most about your school?

The first thing that I like about our school is the friendliness of everyone, in the classrooms and in the hallways, everyone wants to help.  Another thing that I like about our school is our sports programs. I feel like as a school, sports are one of the most important things to us, especially with the amount of students that go to the games and show their support.

10. If you could start a new club at school, what would it be?

If i could start a new club I would make a ski club; not ski racing like the Onekama ski team, but a recreational ski club.

11. What are 3 of your favorite things about the weekends?

My absolute favorite thing about the weekends is being able to sleep in as long as you want, another great thing about the weekend is that you aren't getting new assignments every day, you get a break.

12. If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?

If I could go anywhere in the world I would go to Germany. All of my great grandparents were born there and lots of my close family lives there. Another reason is that I have always wanted to visit Europe.
