Interview with Mr. Matthew Lonn, Secondary Science Teacher

Today, we continue our spotlight series produced in OCS's Journalism & Yearbook independent study. We are spotlighting Mr. Matthew Lonn.
1. Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Thompsonville, down the road from Crystal Mountain. I went to Benzie Central Schools.
2. Did you play any sports in school? If so, what did you play?
I played football, basketball, and soccer during my school days.
3. What made you want to focus on science as your subject for teaching?
I have always liked coming up with explanations for why things work or behave in a certain way. Science provides that outlet.
4. Where did you go for college?
I went to Ferris State University for my undergraduate degree, Michigan State for some law school, and then back to Ferris State for my master’s degree.
5. What aspect of science do you like the most and why?
I like applied sciences the most because they allow you to take everything you’ve learned and use it to solve real-world problems.
6. If you could have any other job, what would it be?
I would have liked to be an environmental lawyer focusing on advocacy and conservation.
7. What is a hobby that you do in your free time?
I enjoy biking and hiking. I like hobbies that get me out into nature.
8. What advice do you have for students?
Smart people learn from their own mistakes. Wise people learn from other people’s mistakes.
