By Mariana Ortiz (Class of 2025)
In the summer, I come to Michigan for “vacation” my mom says. It’s mainly for work, though.
Instead of leaving right after summer ends, we stay a few more months until apple season starts. Because of that, my sister and I end up going to Onekama, and we stay here until the first week of November. I honestly like Onekama. I just go to school, do what I have to do, and go on with my day.
With work after school, I come home late. I also don’t have wifi where I stay to use my computer, so I’m glad my teachers are flexible about late work. I like the food here too. At the school I went to in Texas, they didn’t give us many options, but here they do.
My classmates honestly don’t bother me or cause problems at all. But I can’t say I have a lot of friends here, either. I’m not an introvert – don’t get me wrong – I just don’t see the point in talking or making friends as a senior who is only going to go to school for only a few months, especially when students in my senior class have friends that they’ve known for years. I’m not salty about it, I totally understand, I just really hope they don’t think I’m mean because I don’t try to talk to them or anything.
The teachers here actually teach well and help me if I need it. I don’t think I have ever had a problem with the teachers here at all. So yeah. My experience here has been a good one for sure. (Even though sometimes kids in the halls smell like cottage cheese. Other than that, it’s been the best.)
Today, October 25, is Mariana's last day as a student at OCS. Good luck in the future, Mariana; we'll miss you in ELA 12 and Journalism & Yearbook. <3 — Mr. Harding
