Volleyball (by Ava Blossingham)
On Thursday, October 2, the varsity volleyball team traveled to Buckley for a Northwest Conference match. The Lady Portagers came out strong, winning the first set 25-20. However, the Lady Bears responded and took the next three sets, handing the Portagers a tough loss.
On Saturday, October 4, the team competed in the Midland H.H. Dow Invitational. In pool play, they faced Garber and lost both sets (25-22, 25-18). Next, they took on Ogemaw Heights, splitting the match with a 23-25 loss followed by a 25-20 win. The team then entered bracket play, where they defeated both Reed City and Saginaw Nouvel to capture 1st place in the Silver Bracket.
Cross Country (by Jasmine Lapp)
On Saturday, October 4th, our varsity cross country team brought their all at the Potager Invitational. This race is one of the largest meets in the state. We had Addy Zeller earning her 10th place finish with a time of 20:29.8, and Callie Sinke claiming 6th with a time of 19:18.8.
Make sure to go support the team on Tuesday, October 7th, at 4:15 PM with Benzie hosting. Good luck, Portagers!
FOOTBALL (by Riley Cogburn)
What a game!
The Onekama Portagers football team took a breath-taking win on October 3rd under the Friday night lights. Central Lake left with 14 points to our 36 points. With this win under our belt, the Portagers are now 6-0, still undefeated. The Portagers were on top with their defense, including three interceptions and one fumble.
Chase Gauthier, Tyler Hart, Luke Bradford, Brandon Brindle, and Andrew Potter held our defense together. Chase Gauthier walked away with four tackles, a fumble recovery, one interception, and two tackles for loss. Twelve tackles, one forced fumble, and three tackles for loss— Brandon Brindle was on fire. Along with Tyler Hart’s five tackles, one pass defended, one interception, and two tackles for loss, Andrew Potter had five tackles with 1.5 sacks, and Ryan Hrachovina had four tackles, a pass defended, and 0.5 sacks. Way to go defense!
Our offense was also on a roll that warm Friday night. Tyler Hart brought in 16 rushes for 84 yards and two touchdowns for the team. Bennet Zeller, as well, rushed for 98 yards on 12 carries and completed four of six pass attempts for 30 yards, including a touchdown. In addition, Tyler Hart scored. Luke Bradford hauled in two passes for 62 yards and two touchdowns.
